White-line Woodcut

White-Line Woodcut

(Provincetown Print)

This is a self-registering method (registration is what makes the paper land in the same location for each new color, so that everything lines up). In a reverse of standard woodcut, the lines of the design are cut into the wood. A piece of paper is attached to the wood on one side of the page, with a crease such that it will fold down into the same place every time. Watercolor is painted onto one area of the wood, then the paper is folded over and rubbed on the back with a spoon to transfer the color.

Since the results are different each time, these are like monoprints in a series.
